Responsible AI Guidelines for NC Schools

Artificial intelligence tools are transforming education, but only when used responsibly. North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction encourages districts to adopt thoughtful, human‑centered policies rather than blanket bans. To help you get started, we’ve created a sample Generative AI Policy aligned with NCDPI’s latest recommendations.

This downloadable PDF outlines:

  • Purpose & Scope – who the policy covers and why it’s needed

  • Guiding Principles – equity, human oversight, academic integrity and data privacy

  • Acceptable Uses & Prohibited Uses – concrete examples for classroom learning, teacher support and operations, plus actions to avoid (e.g. unapproved tools, plagiarism or harassment)

  • Age‑Appropriate Guidelines – distinctions for elementary, middle and high school students

  • Implementation & Training – steps for communicating the policy, training staff, educating students and engaging families

We designed this template to close digital divides and empower every learner. District leaders can customize it to reflect local context, then share it with teachers, students and families. Click the button below to download the full policy and begin building your own responsible AI framework.
